The sun is out, those outdoor temperatures are rising, and you’ve already removed your Jeep’s top — providing plenty of open cabin fresh air.

So what is the next thing?

How about removing your vehicle’s doors and replacing them with tubular versions that enhance open-air driving while still providing some safety and a sense of security during your daily travels?

Tubular doors can be an excellent modification for anyone during warm summer months — especially for those who really want to remove their Jeep’s doors but do not want all that open area when driving.

And there begins the questions.

How safe, really, are tubular doors? How do they work? Are they even legal? What about mirrors?

Well, here are some answers to many of those top questions we’ve been asked over the years — all to help you make an informed decision about whether tube doors are right for your Jeep.

What Are Jeep Tube Doors?

Jeep tube doors are aftermarket door versions designed to replace the factory doors on a Jeep. They are typically made from tubular steel or aluminum, creating an open-air feel while providing somewhat of a barrier to keep occupants inside the vehicle. Tube doors are favored for their lightweight design and rugged appearance, and allow anyone an enhanced open cabin experience without

How Do Jeep Tube Doors Work?

Tube doors attach to the same hinges and latch mechanisms as the factory doors. They provide a frame-like structure that allows for increased airflow and visibility while maintaining a level of protection. Most tube doors are designed to be easy to install and remove, allowing Jeep owners to switch between tube doors and full doors depending on their needs.

Are Jeep Tube Doors Safe?

Tube doors are generally safe for off-road use and low-speed driving conditions. They provide a level of protection that is significantly better than having no doors at all, preventing occupants from accidentally falling out. However, they do not offer the same level of protection as full doors in the event of a collision. It’s important to wear seat belts and exercise caution when using tube doors.

Are Jeep Tube Doors Legal?

Tube doors on a Jeep are legal almost everywhere in the United States, as long as you also remain legal with the vehicle’s mirrors, seatbelts and other safety equipment. Currently, Pennsylvania remains the only state where doorless driving, as well as aftermarket tube doors, is (technically) illegal. However, that state’s Senate passed a bill to legalize doorless driving, and the House amended that bill to include aftermarket doors, but a final vote for passage remains unclear. Best practice on this is to consult your local regulations, as well as those from whatever area you plan to travel, before installing and using tube doors on public roads.

What About Mirrors With Tube Doors?

This one is a very important question because while it is legal almost anywhere to remove your Jeep's OEM doors and replace them with tubular versions, most areas require some type of mirror (or mirrors) to remain legal as well. Sometimes, that may mean just the rearview mirror, but usually, you'll need at least one rearward-facing mirror in addition to the main rearview mirror. So, when you are checking your local requirements about doors, it is a good idea to also look up mirror regulations. Now, sometimes tube door kits will include mirrors, but if not, you can purchase inexpensive mirror(s) that utilize brackets to mount to the windshield hinge. Also, if you do like the factory mirrors, there are relocation kits that will pull those mirrors off the door and relocate to the hinge.

Do Tube Doors Provide Protection from the Elements?

Tube doors offer minimal protection from the elements. While they can block some debris and minor obstacles, they do not protect against rain, wind, or extreme temperatures. If weather protection is a concern, consider using tube doors in conjunction with other accessories, such as a soft top, summer top accessories or hardtop to provide more coverage.

Can Tube Doors Be Used Off-Road?

Yes, tube doors are extremely particularly popular for off-road use. They provide excellent visibility and allow for better airflow, making them ideal for trail riding and other off-road activities. The rugged design of tube doors also complements the aesthetic of an off-road-ready Jeep.

How Easy Is It to Install Tube Doors?

Installing tube doors is typically a straightforward process that most Jeep owners can complete with basic tools. The doors attach to the factory hinges and latch mechanisms, and many tube door kits come with all the necessary hardware and instructions. Installation time can vary, but for someone with average skill, it may generally take about 30 minutes to an hour per door.

Do Tube Doors Affect the Jeep's Structural Integrity?

Tube doors do not significantly affect the structural integrity of a Jeep. They are designed to provide a sturdy frame that can withstand normal driving conditions and off-road use. However, they do not offer the same level of impact protection as factory doors. It’s important to consider this when deciding when and where to use tube doors.

Are There Different Types of Tube Doors?

Yes, there are different types of tube doors available, each offering unique features and benefits. Some common types include standard tube doors that have a basic design with a simple tubular frame, safari tube doors that feature additional bars for increased safety and a safari-like appearance, and doors with mesh or netting that include mesh or netting panels for added safety and style.

How Do I Care For Jeep Tube Doors?

Tube doors are typically made from steel and are often powder-coated for durability and corrosion resistance. Washing them regularly with soap and water will also help prevent rust. You can also apply a coat of wax or protectant to help keep them looking their best.
