Superwinch SX Series Winch Review - 10,000k & 12,000k Synthetic and Steel Cable Winches

Hey Rob here for Quadratec.com. Today we're checking out the SX lineup of winches from Superwinch designed to combine power, speed, innovation and proven performance into a great looking winch for the front of your Jeep. There are four winches that make up the SX lineup. We have both a wire rope or a synthetic rope version in the 10,000 pound capacity models and we also have the option of a wire rope or a synthetic rope in the larger 12,000 pound capacity models. As you can see i currently have the SX 10,000 SR synthetic rope winch installed on the front of the Jeep here but no matter which SX series winch you choose all of them share the same great build characteristics. For starters they have an IP68 waterproof and dust proof rating and they utilize a 100 percent load holding mechanical automatic style brake to give you the confidence you need during those especially difficult recovery situations. The 10,000 pound capacity winches utilize a five and a half horsepower sealed motor while the larger 12,000 pound capacity winches are using a six horsepower sealed motor. If you choose one of the wire rope versions either the ten or twelve thousand pound winches you're going to get a 3/8 inch diameter wire rope along with a roller style fairlead. With the synthetic rope versions you're going to get a 3/8 diameter synthetic rope along with an aluminum hawse fairlead. All the winches will include a heavy duty clevis hook along with a pull strap. Superwinch is building in some really great features that I love into their SX line of winches. One we've got this really easy to operate pull and turn clutch handle simply requires you to lift the handle and turn it a quarter turn to either engage or disengage the clutch they're also using a removable and relocatable die cast aluminum control pack that allows you to remove it and tuck it away to slim down the profile of your winch or make it easier to fit your winch in a tighter mounting location. All the winches in the SX lineup include a 12 foot wired winch remote that's got some really cool features built right in. We've got an in and out button of course right on the face of the remote there but on the back side we've got two additional buttons. One is going to activate the built-in flashlight that as you can see can operate even without that remote being plugged into the control pack. That’s using a built-in lithium ion battery that's going to help to get your remote plugged in even during those nighttime recovery situations. We simply lift that remote port door see we get a nice weatherproof seal there a nice solid connection of our remote into the control pack and once that remote is plugged in the button on the other side on the back of the remote will activate our built-in drum light. The combination of those two lights are going to make our nighttime recovery situations even safer. That light of course on the winch remote is going to help assist when you're hooking up your hook to your recovery or anchor point and that built-in drum light is going to make it much easier to see the operation of your winch to ensure that the rope isn't bunching to one side or the other. In addition to that standard wired remote if you choose the synthetic rope version the SR version either 10 or 12,000 pound capacity winches you're also going to get an additional wireless remote which features in and out buttons on the face of the remote and a replaceable battery. The great thing about that wireless remote means you're going to be able to take it with you when you're making your connection with your winch hook out at your recovery point you're not going to have to walk all the way back to your winch if you need to take out a little additional line or pull some line in before you make your connection.
