Reviews for Go Rhino DS4506T Dominator DS Rock Sliders for 18-20 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited
First off and most importantly, these Go Rhino rock sliders look awesome on my JLU and I’d give 5 stars for the quality, look and function of the product. However, I would agree with the previous review that the install was a pain so that’s why I only gave 4 stars. I would suggest pre-threading all bolts into the connector pieces before placing them inside the rock slider for the final installation. The holes have residual powder coat and are way too tight. That said, it was worth the effort and would recommend.
Okay just like the other reviews I would of given this five star on looks and function, however Rhino needs to do better on the installation of this product. I fought for a day and half on and off to keep my sanity with installing these buggers. Sliding part N "bracket" in that running board where thank goodness I have smaller fingers to get in there and hold that bracket in place with the help of another Allen wrench which I placed in the third hole to keep it in place while I tried to thread the screws. I rethreaded each of these screws several times into each of the holes on bracket N before I placed them into the running board. It was difficult even with rethreading to get that screw to take. For my sanity I had to stop many times and reset. All I can say its a good think I'm a stubborn persistent person because the average bear would of gave up long ago.
These look great on my 2018 JL. They also seem like they will be pretty sturdy. The look and quality for these are easily a 4.5 star item. My only complaint on these, and the reason for the 3-star rating, is the install is painful. I'm admittedly not very handy, but this took way too long. First you attach some brackets to your jeep, this was easy and took maybe 20min. Now to attach the rails to this, you insert some angle brackets into the round tube. This means the angle brackets slide around, don't actually sit flush until you put the bolts in, are a pain to get your hands in to hold (It required 2 people), and I spent a lot of time saying words that I'm glad my kids couldn't hear. The install was just not a good experience, but I'm very happy with how my Jeep looks and glad I don't have to do the install again.
Where do I even begin…? Installation was absolutely horrendous. I read the other reviews here thinking, “meh, I’ll work through it…” but they can’t be overstated at all. Sure, these look great but I would not recommend the product unless your name is Bruce Banner and the rage you’ll experience trying to install these will release your inner Hulk and allow you to overcome the manufacturing faults of this product…
The first problem has been noted already in that the holes of the inner angle brackets (they slide into the bars and attach to the vehicle frame mounts) are completely covered in powder coating. Taking the advice of others here, I tried to pre-thread these before attempting to mount onto my vehicle. Still failed. Some screws went in with decent force whereas others were impossible. I’m talking full force in a vise and a few screws still wouldn’t thread all the way. The powder coating was so intense in some areas that the screw simply couldn’t catch onto anything to begin with or would naturally go in crooked. The only “saving grace” was the fact that the inner mounts had 3 holes so you could technically lose one. Although not really – more on that next…
As I mentioned above, the angle brackets slide into the rock slider tubes. They’re loose and literally flip over on their sides inside of the tube. Now imagine trying to mount a large heavy rock slider with inner mounts that are moving left/right and also flipping around, all while trying to overcome the ridiculous threadings. The only way I was able to overcome this was to buy large washers and extra screws and use the third hole on the inner mount to keep it in place and not flip over. It then became a balancing game of deciding what holes to use for the washers vs what to actually mount with based on how good the threading was in each respective location. I gave up on the first night after a few hours but was able to rally the next night and get these terrible things on eventually. I still have at least 2 screws that were unable to go in all the way.
I probably spent at least 6 hours when it was all said and done. I have a hard time imagining the installation being anything other than excruciating unless you have at least 2 others holding the bars and with a full lift to get under the vehicle comfortably. And that still doesn’t necessarily account for the difficulty caused by the powder coated ruined threading.
So have fun if you decide to buy these! Apparently I lost my hex bit immediately after I finished the install. I’m pretty sure it committed suicide.
